Acireale is known as the city of a hundred bells, because of the large number of churches between the old town and the alleys. Many of them were built after the 1639 earthquake and are therefore symbols of the Baroque rebirth of the island. The Cathedral of Acireale
Also known as the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Annunziata, it is one of the city’s most beautiful churches. Stop off at the kiosk in the beautiful square and breathe in the atmosphere of Acireale.
The Timpa
An 80-metre-high promontory of terraced volcanic rocks and several faults, where dense vegetation grows. In the past it was used as a military stronghold but is now a protected nature reserve.
The Church of San Sebastiano
A real Baroque treasure: look up at the imposing facade to admire three tiers of floral decorations, festoons, and marble putti (cupids). Don’t miss the beautiful frescoes inside.
